What I am working on now
Every family has it’s lore. The stories whispered about a certain grandparent, aunt or cousin. My up coming series, tentatively titled ‘The North Port’ comes from my own family lore.
Throughout my life I heard my Great Grandmother called a prostitute (and worse). As I got older, I began to wonder what would drive a church-going, mother of five to make such a choice. In truth I will never know the details, but as I researched her, the era and the area, some probabilities came into focus.
The result is a story surrounding a group of women, trying to survive in small town America, during the Great Depression. I’ve learned that in the 1930’s, American laws were not favorable to the needs of women. Companies didn’t like to hire women with children because they were thought to be unreliable.
Caroline and her friends experience closed doors everywhere they turn. Through poverty, danger, evictions, mental illness and love, Caroline finds that she and Margie are more alike that she could have imagined.
This series will follow Caroline and Margie’s familes into modern day with lot’s of twists and turns.
I can’t wait to introduce you them all!
“When they need you, they use you, when they love you, they choose you.” ~ Margie to Caroline
I am a Wisconsin girl through and through. I love three of our four season (you can keep the mud season that some people call spring). I am passionate about summer nights on Elkhart Lake, frequent visits to all things Door County, the history and danger of the ‘Great Northern Coast’, and the rich, complex, and heart wrenching stories unfolding all around me everyday.
When I’m not glued to my laptop getting my imaginary friends in and out of trouble, I’m usually reading or interferring in the kids’ lives. In the winter I crochet and bake bread, in the summer I try to make flowers grow and spend as much time on, in, or near water as possible. I eat chocolate every single day and I do a little yoga, lead guided meditations, and will stay up late to enjoy watching a thunder storm. I also strive to annoy; I mean amuse my husband as often as possible, which can be easily accomplished by asking dozens of questions during any televised sporting event.
As I write about me, I realize that I get excited about a whole bunch of stuff and we haven’t even gotten to my time singing with a classic rock cover band, performing in murder mystery dinner theater, or my recipe for brown butter chocolate chip cookies. You’ll just have to trust me when I say they are absolutely calorie worthy.
If you’re in the Green Bay area; look for me walking a black, standard poodle up the little hill to visit her bestie, Walter. Give me a wave, I’ll always wave back.
